Joy Parr was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1949. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University in 1971. In 1973 she received her M.Phil. from Yale University and in 1977 her Ph.D. Parr taught history at the University of British Columbia from 1977-1981 and at Queen's University from 1982-1992, becoming professor in 1988. During her time at Queen's University Parr was involved in the development of the Women's Studies program at Queen's and participated in the establishment of the Special Field Concentration in Women's studies that was introduced in the 1986-1987 academic year. In 1989 Parr became the coordinator of Women's Studies. In 1992, Parr left Queen's University to become the Nancy and Jack Farley professor of history at Simon Fraser University until 2003. In 2003, Parr taught at the University of Western Ontario as a full-time professor until he retirement in 2014. Joy Parr passed away in Southhampton Ontario in 2024.
