Scope and content
The International Atomic energy Agency (IAEA) - both directly and under the UN Development Programme (UNDP) - has for some years been assisting India with expert services, fellowships and equipment aimed at development of nuclear technology. In 1965, for example, UNDP/IAEA fellowships were used to train Indian staff in prospecting, mining and processing of nuclear raw materials. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Trombay, just outside Bombay, is the heart of India's atomic energy programme, and IAEA is assisting various studies at the Centre. Expert services and equipment from IAEA this year, for instance, are being utilized by a group at Bhabha which is tackling problems relating to hydrological investigations using nuclear techniques - including ground water studies in arid and semi-arid zones of India as well as stucies of seepage from canals and reservoirs. Considering the seriousness of drought problems in India, this study is extremely important. Another of India's major problems is food wastage, and IAEA is thus assisting the Division of Biochemistry and Food Technology at Bhabha in studies relating to use of radioisotopes in food preservation.
