The UN Commission on Human Rights opened its annual thirty-sixth session on 4 February. The current session which is scheduled to end on 14 March is expected to deal with some 29 items on its agenda. Waleed Sadi (Jordan) was elected Chairman by acclamation. Lev I. Maskimov (Byelorussian SSR), Nsanze Terence (Burundi) and Carlos Calero-Rodrigues (Brazil) were elected as Vice-Chairman. At the meeting on 5 February, Claus Vollers (Federal Republic of Germany) was unanimously elected Rapporteur.
