The Committee on Periodic Reports, which was set up last year by the Commission on Human Rights to consider reports on the progress made in the protection of human rights, opened a five day session at United Nations Headquarters this morning.
The six-members Committee will consider informations contained in a report indicating what progress has been made in recent years in the protection of human rights, through steps in the legal, social, educational and political fields. This report was prepared at Headquarters on the basis of information received from 67 governments and two UN agencies for the period of 1957-1959.
Here is a view of the confernce room during the meeting. Seated at centre, at desk at left, is Mr. Felix Ermacora (Austria), who was elected Chairman and Rapporteur at the openeing of the meeting. Seated on either side of the Chairman are Mr. Egon Schwelb, Deputy Director of the UN Division on Human Rights, and Mrs. Margaret E. Bruce, Committee Secretary.
