The Dounreay Fast Reactor, which is owned and operated by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, is an experimental power reactor that produces a total thermal power of 72 megawatts and a net electric power of 12 megawatts. Construction was started in 1955 and the first self-sustaining chain reaction occured in November 1959. The principal purpose of the fast reactor is to develop and demonstrate the technology of breeder reactors in which more fuel is produced than consumed.
Here is a general view of the Dounreay Fast Reactor. The outer containment sphere is 135 ft. in diameter. This reactor is one of three on the site, the others being an admiralty reactor aimed at developing technology for ship propulsion and a materials-testing reactor for experiments on structural components of reactors.
