General note

History of Name Change(s):

1884
Edmonton Public Schools was duly organized under the provisions of the Northwest Territories School Ordinance of 1884 under the name the School District of Edmonton Protestant Public School District #7.

1885
On February 3, 1885, Edmonton Public Schools was legally constituted under the Northwest Territories Department of Education. Official incorporation of the Protestant Public School District #7 allowed the Board of Trustees to collect taxes from residents of the settlement of Edmonton.

1907
On February 26, 1907, The Alberta Gazette (Vol. 3, No. 4, p. 3) published a statement by Deputy Minister of Education D.S. MacKenzie:
“Under the provisions of subsection (2) of section 35 of The School Ordinance, the Minister of Education has this day been pleased to direct that from and after the date hereof, The School District of Edmonton Protestant Public School District No. 7 of the North-West Territories shall be known under the name of The Edmonton School District No. 7 of the North-West Territories.”

1955
The common-use name "Edmonton Public Schools" was first used in the 1955 Annual Report.

2019
In August 2019, the name was changed from Edmonton School District No. 7 to Edmonton School Division. The change was prompted by the Alberta Education Act, which redesigned how school jurisdictions are named. The legislation aimed to remove numbers (e.g., School District No. 7) and standardize naming to "divisions." Despite the legal name change to "Edmonton School Division," the Board continues to operate under the public-facing name, Edmonton Public Schools. Edmonton Public Schools is a statutory corporation established by Order of the Minister of Education pursuant to section 246(1) of the School Act.
