Twelve nations are members of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), a new organization set up under UNESCO sponsorship to aid the co-operation between separate research centers in the field of nuclear theory. The CERN program is concentrated on two big machines, a spectro-cyclotron and a proton-synchrotron, now under construction at the CERN laboratory site near Geneva.
The synchro-cyclotron is designed to work at the 600 million electron volts energy level; it consists of a vacuum chamber bbetween the circular poles of a 2500 tons electro-magnet. Protons are injected in this chamber and accelerated along a spiral path by high frequency electrical forces until they reach speeds approaching 250000 km. per second.
Shown here is the synchro-cyclotroon's electro magnet, with the vacuum tank between the pole plates. Two technicians are making some final adjustments. Note the water pipe connections for cooling water which circulates through the aluminum conductor of the electro magnet's energizing coil.
