The European Organization for Nuclear Research (C.E.R.N.) was created in 1952 under the auspices of UNESCO to aid the co-operation between separate research entres in the field of nuclear theory. At present 13 European nations are members of the Organization, whose programme is concentrated on two big machines, a synchro-cyclotron and a proton-synchroton.
