In 1865, Isaac Hellmuth founded the London Collegiate Institute which changed its name two years later to Hellmuth College, or Hellmuth Boys’ College. Hellmuth Boys’ College provided accommodation for 150 boarders and offered academic and commercial subjects that would prepare young men for military and commercial careers. The property of the Boys’ College was bounded by Wellington Street, St. James Street, Waterloo Street and Grosvenor Street in London. When the Hellmuth Boys’ College failed, Isaac Hellmuth converted it into the University of Western Ontario hoping to offer faculties in Divinity, the Arts, Law and Medicine. The Hellmuth Boys' College closed in 1877 and the building was later demolished in 1895, but the faculties survived through the University of Western Ontario.

Hellmuth Ladies’ College was founded by Isaac Hellmuth in 1869, four years after the opening of the Boys’ College and was inaugurated by HRH Prince Arthur. The Ladies’ College was devoted to the study of arts and sciences and was located on Richmond Street North, just south of Windermere Road on the hill overlooking the Thames River. Hellmuth Ladies' College closed in 1899. Since its closing, the building served as a convent and orphanage. It stood until 1976, when it was demolished.

Biographical history
Isaac Hellmuth was born in 1817 into a Jewish Family in Poland. Hellmuth was training to be a Rabbi, like his father, until his conversion to Christianity in the early 1830’s during his time at Breslau University. He moved to Canada in 1844 and became an ordained priest by 1846. Hellmuth moved to England for a short period of time, but returned back to Canada and was introduced to the township of London Ontario by Benjamin Cronyn (Bishop of Huron). Isaac Hellmuth was the founder and sole proprietor of both Hellmuth Boys’ College and Hellmuth Ladies’ College in London, Ontario. He served as Chair on the boards for both schools. In collaboration with the Association of the Professors and Alumni of Huron College, Isaac Hellmuth also actively pursued the assembly of an official university in London Ontario. This endeavor was successful in 1878 when the senate for the new Western University of London, Ontario purchased Hellmuth Boys’ College and their property.
Custodial history
This material in this collection was acquired by several donors. John Broomfield donated the contents described in the Isaac Hellmuth sub-series, as well as the photograph in the Isidore F. Hellmuth sub-series in 2018. The earlier custodity of these materials is unknown. The Isidore F. Hellmuth notebooks were donated by Deenna Sigel in 2014. The earlier custodial history of these notebooks is unknown. Sadie Smith doanted the photographs and prospectuse in 1934. Her father was a drill sergeant at both Hellmuth Ladies' and Hellmuth Boys' College. K.E Taylor, neice of Mortimer Atkinson, donated the scrapbook described in the Hellmuth Boys' College series. Mortimer Atkinson attended Hellmuth Boys' College and created the scrapbook. The London Board of Education donated the London Collegiate Institute Minute Book (board of trustees) in 1937. The Hellmuth Ladies' College visitors book was donated in 1964 by Mrs. H. C. Duff, niece of Rev. E. N. English, principal. Various items described in the Hellmuth Ladies' College series, such as correspondence, promotional materials, academic documents, and financial documents were donated by Mrs. G.N. Siedle, neice of Virginia Seidle, a former Hellmuth Ladies' College student. Other promotional materials, newspaper materials,and the loose scrapbook in the Hellmuth Ladies' College series were donated by E. Seaborn. A large portion of the photographs in the collection are copies of negatives from the Huron College Libraries.
Scope and content
The Hellmuth Colleges Collection contains materials relating to the Hellmuth family (Isaac and Isidore), Hellmuth Boys' College, and Hellmuth Ladies' College. There are materials relating to the colleges, produced by the colleges, as well as materials created by students attending the colleges. Included in the collection are photographs (students, college grounds, Hellmuth family), promotional materials, notebooks, financial documents, academic documents, scrapbooks, newspaper materials, correspondence, a minute book, a visitors book, certificates, HBC lots for sale advertisement, and materials relating to the Hellmuth 70 year reunion.
