Scope and content

The UN Commission on Human Rights began its thirty-second session at the Palais des Nations in Geneva today, by unanimously electing Leopoldo Benites of Ecuador as its Chairman. Mr Benites was President of the UN General Assembly as its twenty-eighth session in 1973 and at its sixth special session in 1974. Elected as Vice-Chairman of the Commission were: Mrs. Rajan Nehru (India), Founder member of the Indian Federation of the UN Association; Pierre Juvigny (France), Counsellor of State, and Luben Pentohev (Bulgaria), Senior juridical Counsellor, Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Mrs. Marian J.T. Kamara (Sierra Leone), principal social development officer at the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rural development, was elected Rapporteur. Both Mr. Benites and Mrs Kamara are members of the Ad Hoc Working Group established by the Commission to inquire into the human rights situation in Chile. The Group will be reporting to the Commission at its current session.
At the presiding table, from left: Marc Schreiber, Director of the Human Rights Division; Leopoldo Benites (Ecuador), Chairman; and Henri Mazaud (Secretary).
