Alicia de Larrocha, the renowned Spanish pianist, gave a recital in the General Assembly Hall this evening, as part of the special ceremony of celebration to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The ceremony , at which human rights prizes were awarded to eight recipients, replaces the traditional concert normally held at UN Headquarters on 10 December. The ceremony began with a reading of the Preamble to the Human Rights Declaration, by the noted American actress Lauren Bacall. The President of the General Assembly, Indalecio Lievano (Colombia), then described the human rights prizes. The citations to each recipient was read by Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. Each recipient made a brief address of acceptance. The prizes were awarded in accordance with General Assembly Resolution 2217 (XXI) of 19 Decemeber 1966. Four of the prizes went to individuals and four to organizations. After the eight prizes were awarded, the audience heard music by Soler, Granados, and Chopin played by Alicia de Larrocha.
The National Union of Tunisian Women, devoted to the promotion of women's rights in all fields, with particular emphasis on social freedoms and development. The award was accepted by Fathia Mzali, President of the Union.
