          Zambia ratified today the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Dicrimination, which came into force on 4 January 1969. Under the Convention, States parties condemn "racial discrimination and undertake to pursue, by all appropriate means and without delay, a policy of eliminating racial discrimination in all its forms and promoting understanding among races." A Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has been established under the Convention to oversee implementation of its provisions. The Convention was adopted by the General Assembly on 21 December 1965. Zambia also acceded to the Convention on the Political Rights of Women, which was adopted by the General Assembly on 20 December 1952. The Convention has been into force since 7 July 1954. It provides that women, on equal terms with men and without discrimination, shall have the right to vote, to be eligible for election to all publicy elected bodies, to hold public office and to exercise all public functions.

          Yugoslavia today became fourteenth State to sign the International Covenant on Human Rights. The two Covenants, on Civil and Political Rights and on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, were
          adopted by the General Assembly on 16 December 1966.
          When they come into force, they will require States Parties to implement the rights and freedoms proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

          Yugoslavia today ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The two Covenants and an Optional Protocol to the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights were adopted by the General Assembly on 16 December 1966.

          On 26 February 1982, Miljan Komatina, Permanent Representative of Yugoslavia to the UN,presented the following instruments of ratification and accession to John F. Scott (right) Director of the UN Legal Counsel :
          (a) Instrument of ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Dicrimination against Women, adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 18 December 1979;
          (b) Instrument of accession to the Convention of the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, done at New York on 10 June 1958.
