The protection of workers against radiation to which they might be exposed in the industrial use of X-rays or radioactive substances was the subject for study by a group of experts meeting at the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) Headquarters in Geneva from 25 November to 11 December 1957. In completing their work, the experts stressed the imperative need for adequate education of the workers in the field of radiation protection.

This photograph shows a technician at work on the gamma-ray radiography of castings in a specially shielded room. the operator (who actually stands in the recess during the exposure) actuates the equipment by remote control.
