The records consist of responses from the governments of Indonesia, Peru, the United States, the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, Guatemala, Burma, the USSR, Ireland, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Turkey, South Africa, the Philippines, China, Yugoslavia, Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, Australia, Japan, Israel, and France to the Questionnaire on Slavery and Servitude sent on behalf of the Secretary-General to governments in April 1950.

The Economic and Social Council, at its ninth session, instructed the Secretary-General to appoint an Ad Hoc Committee of experts to survey the field of slavery and other institutions or customs resembling slavery. The Ad Hoc Committee prepared a questionnaire that was sent to governments in order to secure official information on the present situation of slavery and servitude. This questionnaire was followed by a request for additional information as many governments failed to submit information on territories under their control, or based their responses entirely on the legal status of various forms of servitude, while others submitted information in ambiguous terms that required further clarification. The government responses to both these communications form part of the records of this series.

Within the Division of Human Rights, a working group on slavery and servitude was formed in 1951 to examine the material received by the Ad Hoc Committee from governments, non-governmental organizations and other sources in order to draft a report based on this new information.

The records consist of responses from the governments of Afghanistan, El Salvador, Panama, Portugal, France, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Iraq, Philippines, Iran, China, Greece, Chile and France to the Questionnaire on Slavery and Servitude sent on behalf of the Secretary-General to governments in 1950.

The records contain correspondence regarding the publication by the Division of Human Rights entitled Suppression of Slavery, a collection of papers originally prepared and collected for the Ad Hoc Committee on Slavery and including the texts of all the important international agreements on slavery. The file includes memoranda of the working group on slavery and servitude (within the Division of Human Rights), the group charged with examining the material received by the Ad Hoc Committee from governments, NGOs and other sources for the drafting of an eventual final report to ECOSOC. A copy of the draft letter sent to the government of Saudi Arabia on behalf of the Secretary-General requesting additional information on slavery forms part of these records.
