Fonds consists of records related to the establishment, operation, and activities of the libraries at Western University. The fonds is composed of 7 series, with various designated sub-series.
The General Series primarily consists of records related to the staff activities and operations of the wider library system at Western University. This series includes materials related to departmental committees, working groups and task forces, along with system-wide initiatives and communications. The series also includes materials related to planning, professional development, and fundraising. The series includes three sub-series, the first of which contains records related to the research, development and publication of The Libraries at Western: 1970-1987. The book was written by former Western University Law Librarian Margaret A. Banks. The second sub-series includes records related to the Twenty Year Club, a staff recognition which began in 1985. The final sub-series included staff-facing newsletters published within the library system.
The Office of the University Librarian series primarily includes records related to those who have held the role of Chief or University Librarian at Western University, although it also includes records more generally issued from that office. Sub-series have been designated for the following University Librarians: Fred Landon (Director of Library Services 1923-1927, Chief Librarian 1927-1947), Dr. James J. Talman (Chief Librarian, 1947-1970), Dr. Robert Lee (Director of Libraries, 1970-1989) and Catherine Quinlan (University Librarian, 1990-1997).
The Lawson Memorial Library series and D.B. Weldon Library series consist of records related to the development, construction, and operations of each library, respectively.
The Science Libraries series primarily consist of records related to the early the science department libraries at Western University, prior to their amalgamation. Textual and graphic materials related to the former Faculty of Medicine Library and Engineering library are featured. The series also includes records related to space allocation, the amalgamation of the science libraries, and the construction of the Allyn & Betty Taylor Library
The Regional History and Special Collections series include records related to rare and valuable manuscripts and musical compositions held by Western Libraries, in addition to archival materials maintained within the library system. Records primarily pre-date the establishment of Western University's Archives and Research Collections Centre (ARCC) in 2002, which currently houses the majority of Special Collections and archival materials.
The Slides series consists of over 1000 colour slides, most of which were created in the 1970s and 1980s. The slides include content from various libraries at Western, including Althouse College of Education Library, the Engineering Library, the Law Library, the Music Library and the D.B. Weldon Library.
