George Agnew Reid fonds

Fonds consists of two scrapbooks containing material created and collected throughout George Reid’s life and were compiled by him in the late 1930’s. Volume I, 500 pages, contains photographs and notes on the Reid family; drawings, sketches, etc., as well as press clippings and exhibition catalogues relating to works of art by Reid and his first wife, Mary Hiester Reid. The 131 pages of Volume II are devoted to designs for buildings and their interior fittings, including summer homes and a church at Onteora, New York, houses in Wychwood Park (Toronto) including the Reid house, and Ontario College of Art designs. Materials include drawings in pencil, pastel and ink, watercolour sketches, small oil paintings, blueprints, photographs, postcards, letters, texts of speeches, letters, awards and material clipped from magazines and newspapers.

Letters were received from several members of the Group of Seven, Florence Wyle, Arthur Heming, Fred Brigden, G.A. Reid and many others. Clipping files relate both to his professional life and his interest in economics and current events. The fonds arrived at the archives in no discernible order; order has been imposed by the archivist to correspond as much as possible to a file listing found in the fonds. Henry Sandham collection

Collection consists of a four-volume set of proof engravings by Henry Sandham for his illustrations in Century Magazine and other publications. The engravings were assembled by the artist, who inscribed in ink on the title page of volume 1: “The only complete set of proofs of the engravings from Hy Sandham’s drawings for Century Magazine from 1881 to 1886. These proofs were printed from the blocks before they were electro-typed and cannot now be reproduced except by being engraved again. The cost of each print in this book was fifty cents. Hy. S.”

The fonds consists of correspondence with art dealers, artists and public art institutions, invoices, shipping and customs forms and other documents relating to their involvement in the international art market in the mid-20th century. Carbon copies of letters written by the Zacks and letters written to them are included. The fonds also contains the administrative files kept by the Zacks: insurance lists, index cards for art and books, photographs and catalogues. The fonds includes the records of the Zacks’ involvement as board members in a variety of organizations relating to the arts, including agendas, memos, minutes of meetings, and travel arrangements. Correspondence files document the Zacks’ involvement in the State of Israel, through its cultural institutions, and communication with prominent citizens. Mrs. Zacks’ papers created after her husband’s death relate to her honourary degree, the Order of Canada, board activities and social involvement. File consists of a typed transcription of a morality complaint filed against Asian Sudburians by Mrs. C.R. McKessock, President of the Local Council of Women of Sudbury (October 16, 1912), the Provincial Police acknowledgment letter (October 17, 1912), the Superintendent Roger's reply to the complaint (October 19, 1912), and Mrs McKessock's reply letter (October 21, 1912). Also included is an Archives of Ontario Request Slip to see R.G. 23, Series File E-18 1.16 Sudbury - Complaints of Loose Morality and Against Chinese Residents Ontario Provincial Police File Regarding 1912 as well as various correspondence between Michael Kelly and the Ontario Provincial Police discussing Kelly's request to view these records at the Archives of Ontario.

Memo

One memo dated May 18, 1972 and sent by W.C. Muirhead [Bill Muirhead] concerning the sale of Muirhead Stations Limited to Alan Querney. This memo, while not addressed, was most likely sent to the employees of Muirhead Stations Limited at the time of purchase.

Fax

One photocopy of a fax, dated December 4, 1991, to Wendy Watson of MCTV from Alan Querney of Muirheads. Attached to the fax are photocopies of a newspaper clipping ("Scottish Sailor opened store 100 years ago" by Harold Carmichael, The Sudbury Star, October 30, 1991) and two photocopies of sections in books regarding the history of Muirheads ("Muirhead Stationers Inc." in The Sudbury Region by Richard P. Baine, 1969, p. 147; and "The first 75 years : a headline history of Sudbury, Canada" by Charles Dorian, 1958, p26-27).
