The International Conference on Human Rights, the first such world-wide meeting organized under UN auspices, opened its session at the New Majlis Building in Teheran on 22 April and heard statements by the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlevi, and by Secretary-General U Thant. Princess Ashraf of Iran, former Chairman of the Un Commission on the Status of Women, was elected as President of the Conference. Participating in the conference are representatives from 79 Member States of the UN and specialized agencies, as well as observers from the specialized agencies, inter-governmental and non-governmental orgainsztions specifically interested in the field of human rights. The Conference, called by the General Assembly, will serve as a major event of International Year for Human Rights, 1968, which was proclaimed by the General Assembly to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
