Italy today became the eighth member State to sign the two covenants on human rights which were adopted by the General Assembly on 16 December 1966 - the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The two Covenants, when they come into force, will require States parties to them to implement the rights and freedoms proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. An Optional Protocol, also approved by the General Assembly, when it becomes effective, will permit consideration by a Human Rights Committee of petitions from individuals claiming to be victims of violations set forth in the Covenant.
