Lyautey, Louis Hubert Gonzalve (born 17 Nov. 1854 in Nancy - died 21 July 1934 in Thorey).
French statesman, marshal and colonial administrator.
He was a pioneer in promoting the development of Asia and Africa.

Career:

  • 1921 Marshal of France;
  • He served as a military in Indochina (1894), Madagascar and Algeria before being sent to Morocco.
  • From 1912 to 1925, he was Resident Commissioner-General of the French Republic in Morocco after the establishment of a French protectorate.
  • In December 1916 he was recalled to Paris and became War Minister (1916-1917) in the government headed by Aristide Briand.
  • He was convinced that the Nivelle Offensive was a mistake. Unable to stop the offensive he resigned from office in March 1917.
  • He returned to his post in Morocco (1917-1925) where he established French authority. He devoted to administering the protectorate, developing the economy, extending the borders, pacifying native resistance and successfully developing Casablanca as a seaport.
    His tactics of pacification involved much mediation and he tried to divide tribal opposition and to protect traditional elites.

Archival history

The Lyautey's private papers were deposited with the United Nations Library on 17 January 1960 by Mr. Pierre Lyautey, executor and sole legatee of Marshal Lyautey.
