Scope and content

In October 1967 at the Teheran University Nuclear Centre (TUNC), Iran's first atomic reactor(spool type research reactor of 5 mega watts capacity using MTR fuel) became critical and is now in the initial stages of operation and use. To ensure that the Plan Organization and the TUNC have ready access to expert advice during the reactor's initial work, both in the fields of instrumentation and maintenance of nucleonic equipment in reactor usage, the Government of Iran, with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Participating Agency, has been utilizing the services of two experts, one in Maintenance of Nucleonic Equipment, and the other in Reactor Operations (Utilisation). The reactor is also being used in services to outside research activities, particularly by way of neutron activation analysis of biological and archaeological samples. It can also be used profitably in the oil industry and it is proposed that the Teheran police use it in opium analysis in determining geographic origin of samples. A Radio-Isotopes Production Expert has started production for use in industrial gas pipe tests.

The Agricultural Laboratory of the Teheran University Nuclear Centre, in this facility, Mr. [?] (Iran), shown here, is working on a project in which the degree of efficiency of fertilizers is tested by tracing the movement of nitrogen and phosphorus through wheat plants.
