The TRICO reactor centre at Lovanium University in Leopoldville has been awarded an International Atomic Energy Agency contract to study the conditions of the bone caused by leprosy, smallpox and other diseases, and by nutritional deficiencies. Under a research contract, the IAEA will provide radio-isotopes and other supplies and equipment worth USD 7'750 to the TRICO centre to conduct the research. This is part of the IAEA programme launched in 1958 to promote the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. To date, some 200 research contracts have been awarded to institutions in various countries.
