Scope and content
The Norwegian-Dutch Joint Establishment for Nuclear Energy Research (JENER) was founded in 1951 at Kjeller, near Oslo. Its primary purpose, according to its Director, Dr. Gunnar Randers, is to determine whether heavy-water reactors are technically sound for power production. In addition to intensive research activities, JENER produces radio-active isotopes for medical and research purposes at home and throughout Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. Scientists from countries such as Argentina, India, Sweden, Switzerland, the United States and Yugoslavia have also been sent for training at JENER's international reactor school.
A steam producing reactor, under construction at Halden, is only a hole in the hillside at the present time, but this picture of the model gives an impression of how it will look. At right - that part of the plant which will not be underground. At left - the hill sectioned in order to show the reactor in its place in the cave.
