Custodial history
In the late 1940s the Barrhead School Division embarked on a program of centralization. A few rural one-room schools were brought into the school division. One of these schools had a little black organ in it. The Superintendent, Mr. Steklin, indicated it would be destroyed if not claimed. The Secretary-Treasurer, Katherine, rescued the organ and gave it to her sister, Miss Magdalena Baker, to use as a new teacher. She used it throughout her teaching career that spanned 31 years. Miss Baker was teaching at Newton School at the time of her donation. Upon acquisition, it was used exclusively for the annual 1881 Christmas Concert hosted by Edmonton Public Schools Archives and Museum. The concert featured Edmonton Public School students dressed in historical costumes performing the nativity play, reciting poems and singing carols.
