Scope and content
To encourage and advance agricultural science throughout Latin America, the countries of that area in 1940 established in Costa Rica the Inter-American Institute for Agricultural science (IICA) to undertake research, teaching and extension activities in the theory and practice of agriculture and related arts and sciences. In recent years the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has assisted with forestry training and in analysis of field experiments. the Institute is presently conducting experiments with coffee, cacao, rice, bananas, sesame and grass.
Experiments in radiation are carried out at the Institute with the co-operation of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the International Co-operation Administration (ICA). Here, at the Gamma field an expert checks the efffect of radiation on banana trees placed at different distances from the source.
