The Federal Republic of Germany today became a Party to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which entered into force on 4 January 1969. The instrument of ratification was received by the UN Office of Legal Affairs. Under the Convention, Parties "condemn racial discrimination and undertake to pursue, by all appropriate means and without delay, a policy of eliminating racial discrimination in all its forms and promoting understanding among races." The Convention provides for the estbalishment of machinery to oversee the implementation of its provisions. The Convention, adopted by the General Assembly on 21 December 1965, was opened for signature on 7 March and has been signed by 71 countries.
