At a laboratory near Rangoon, the Government of Burma has set up an agricultural research programme using radioisotopes, the radioactive forms of normally nonradioactive chemical elements. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is cooperating in this programme and is providing radioisotopes, laboratory equipment, and expert help. the research programme is beginning with studies on the nutrition of rice, using superphosphate fertilizer labelled with radioactive phosphorus isotopes. Measurements of the uptake of phosphorus from a range of typical paddy soils are being made.
Technicians using electrical apparatus to determine nonradioactive phosphorus content, for comparison with radioisotope results.
