Silbernagel-(Caloyanni), Dr. Alfred (1877-1938), son of a bourgeois Basel family.
Career:
Study of law, lawyer and notary, president of the country court of Basel (Stadt) from 1907 until 1923. He was actively involved in the childprotection mouvement and in reform of the juvenile penal law. The foundation of the "Office international pour la protection de l'enfance" (International Office of Child Protection) in Brussels was started by him. In Switzerland he was made honorary president of the "Association internationale pour la protection de l'enfance" (International Association of Child Protection). He was also president of the "Baselstädtische Aktionskomitee für den Eintritt der Schweiz in den Völkerbund" (Baseltown Action Committee in favour of Switzerland's entry into the League of Nations), which has been founded in reaction to the referendum on Switzerland's entry. Its purpose was to strengthen the support of League of Nations membership in the population.

From his activity as president of the "Baselstädtische Aktionskomitee für den Eintritt der Schweiz in den Völkerbund" (Baseltown Action Committee in favour of Switzerland's entry into the League of Nations), Dr. Alfred Silbernagel bequeathed material to the League of Nations Library.

The first six items of the collection (folder 1.1-6) contain the correspondence between Matthey, Silbernagel's attorney, and Sevensma, director of the Library of the League of Nations, concerning this legacy, as well as an extract of Silbernagel's last will and a letter by him explaining the motives of his bequest.
The actual collection consists of newspaperclippings, postcards, posters and pamphlets. All of the items concern the referendum held in Switzerland on the question of Swiss membership in the League of Nations, on 16 May 1920. Especially the activities of the Baseltown Action Committee are documented.
