On 1967 the Commission on Human Rights considered the item "Question of the violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including policies of racial discrimination and segregation and of apartheid in all countries with particular reference to colonial and other dependent countries and territories". The Commission adopted five resolutions on the subject (resolutions 5 - 9 (XXIII)). In resolution 7 (XXIII) entitles "Action effectively to combat racial discrimination and the policies of apartheid and segregation" the Commission decided to appoint Mr. Manoucher Ganji (Iran) Special Rapporteur to survey UN past action and to study the situation in South Africa, South West Africa and Southern Rhodesia.
Resolution 8 called on the Sub-Commission to prepare a report containing information on violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms in this regard. The records of the Division of Human Rights with respect to this study are contained in this sub-sub-series.
The records include several files of correspondence with regard to the work of the Ad Hoc Working Group of Experts on South Africa established under resolution 2 (XXIII) of the Commission on Human Rights.
