ECOSOC resolution 1589 (L) (05.1971) and resolution 8 (XXIV) of the Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities (08.1971) called for a complete and comprehensive study of the problem of discrimination against indigenous populations. The Sub-Commission was charged with the task of suggesting necessary national and international measures for eliminating such discrimination, in co-operation with the other organs and bodies of the United Nations and with competent international organizations.

The records consist of correspondence related to the work of the Division in servicing the Sub-Commission in this regard.
