The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, opened for signature in 1966, entered into force in 01.1969. In accordance with Article 8 of the Convention, a Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) was established. The Committee consisted of 18 independent experts elected by States Parties by secret ballot for a term of 4 years.
CERD was the first supervisory committee to be established under a UN human rights treaty.
The records consist of correspondence with regard to the election of members and the work of the Committee as well as communications from governments with regard to Article 9 of the Convention, under which States Parties were to provide the Committee a report on the legislative, judicial, administrative or other measures that they had adopted and that give effect to the provisions of the Convention.
