In 1956 the Conference of Plenipotentiaries adopted the Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade, and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery. The Conference also adopted a resolution recommending to ECOSOC to initiate a study of the question of marriage, including the desirability of free consent of both parties and of the establishment of a minimum age for marriage.
