The Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities held its forty-third session in Geneva form 5 to 30 August. During the session, the Sub-Commission considered and recommended measures for United Nations action in many human rights fields. These included the elimination of racial and religious discrimination; the administration of justice nad the human rights of detainees; the realization of economic, social and cultural rights; and discrimination against indigenous peoples.

The UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, which is now holding its 12th session, this morning continued discussion of the report on discrimination in religious matters prepared by Dr. Arcot Krishnaswani, of India.
Here, two of the participants in the current session, Mrs. Zoya Vasilevna Mironova (USSR); and Dr. Franz Matsch (Austria), are seen exchanging views shortly before the meeting got under way.

The Sub-Commission resumed its chapter-by-chapter review of the special rapporteur's draft report on discrimination in the matter of political rights.

The UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities was asked this morning to assume responability for outlining a program of action designed to "wipe out the last remnants of discrimination" in the field of political rights. The request was made by Hernan Santa Cruz (Chile), the Sub-Commission's Rapporteur in this field, in introduction his final report on a study of discrimination relating to political rights.
