Biographical history
The Mahler family includes the children of Bernard and Marie Mahler, their spouses, and their children. The children of Bernard and Marie include: Isidor, Gustav, Ernst, Leopoldine, Karl, Rudolf, Alois (Louis), Justine (Ernestine), Arnold, Friedrich (Fritz), Alfred, Emma Marie Eleanor, and Konrad Mahler. Most notably, Gustav Mahler, was the eldest surviving Mahler sibling and was also a famed conductor and composer in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Rosé family includes the children of Herman and Maria Rosé, their spouses, and their children. The children of Herman and Maria include: Alexander, Eduard, Arnold Josef, and Berthold Rosé. Both Alexander and Arnold were members of the well-known 19th and 20th century musical ensemble, The Rosé Quartet.
Several relationships and marriages connected these families. Gustav Mahler and Arnold Rosé were musical contemporaries and friends. In 1898, Emma Marie Eleanor Mahler married Eduard Rosé. And in 1902, Justine Mahler married Arnold Josef Rosé. As a result of Justine and Arnold's union, they had two children. Their eldest child was named Alfred Rosé. Alfred Rosé established himself as a musician, musical therapist, professor, and composer. He eventually immigrated to London, Ontario in 1948. The connections between the Mahler and Rosé families resulted in the records, files, letters, photographs, memorabilia, and artifacts that make up The Gustav Mahler-Alfred Rosé Collection.

Custodial history
The content of what today constitutes the GMAR Collection has been received from several sources over many decades. The first acquisition took place in 1971, when the University purchased a collection of Mahler letters from Alfred Rose. The majority of the Collection was received from Maria Rose through a series of donations. As a result of a memorandum of understanding negotiated in 1981, her gift was physically received 1983. However, under the terms of the 1983 donation agreement, legal title to the portions of the donation took place in three separate phases, in 1983, 1989 and 1995. A further donation was received from Maria Rose in 1997, with the balance of her collection received through her estate in 1999. The Collection has also been augmented by the purchase of items from Sotheby’s in New York in 1984 and by donations of a small number of additional items received from various sources, the most recent of which arriving in 1996. Scope and content
This collection consists of extensive personal correspondence, concert documents, scores, manuscripts, recognition, primary publications, secondary publications, university papers, photographs, recordings, memorabilia and artifacts mainly relating to the private and professional lives of Gustav Mahler, Alfred Rosé, Arnold Rosé, Alma Rosé, Bruno Walter, Justine Rosé, and Maria Rosé. Other material relating to Alma Mahler-Werfel, Marie Mahler, Otto Mahler, Maria Rosé, Albine Adler, Dorothy Beswick Hetherington, Lorraine Busby, Jacob Dont, Martha Freud, R.A. Loederer, Nora Nathan, Richard Newman, Richard Strauss, and Arturo Toscanini are included. Also included are materials in the collection whose connection is unclear.
