Biographical history
The Home for Incurables was established by the WCA in 1894 in an old, framed building on Hamilton Road at Rectory (577 Hamilton Road). In March of 1896, they moved the location of the institution to 708 Dundas Street and was renamed the Jubilee Home for Incurables. The need for additional space became clear as renovations and additions were made to the building between 1901-1907, and the “McLean Home” at 714 Dundas was purchased in 1915. It was also during this time that the home was beginning to be casually referred to as the ‘Victoria Home’.
In 1918, Victoria Home petitioned the Minister of Health to increase the grant allotment for the institution. This increase allowed WCA to purchase the building on 81 Grand Avenue in 1920, becoming the new residence for Victoria Home. Mr. O. Roy Moore and Hyatt Brothers began to work on the extension of the building shortly after the purchase, with residents being relocated in 1921. This was the first stage of what was to be Parkwood Hospital.
