Biographical history
Earle Clare Shelley (1905-1990) was a graduate of Waterloo College (now Wilfrid Laurier University) in Waterloo, Ontario, and a professor, high school teacher, poet, and author. Born in Bridgeport, Ontario, Shelley attended high school at Waterloo College School from 1920-1924. He received his BA from Waterloo College in 1928, and was head of the French Department at Waterloo College from 1928-1931. Shelley graduated from the College of Education at the University of Toronto in 1932 and taught high school for 33 years. He served with the Canadian Army from 1939-1946. He wrote several books of poetry, and also compiled a two-volume French grammar dictionary. Shelley served on the Alumni boards of Waterloo College, Waterloo Lutheran University, and Wilfrid Laurier University, and also on the Senate and Board of Governors of the University. In recognition of this service, the Alumni Association named Earle Shelley "Alumnus of the Century".
