Scope note(s)

  • Post-colonization and prior to 1870, the Hudson's Bay Company governed the West, which included Fort Edmonton (established in 1754). Education of children in the Northwest Territories was provided by church missions and private religious schools. In 1881, a public school was built in the Edmonton settlement. In 1882, Edmonton became part of the District of Alberta, one of the four districts of the Northwest Territories. In 1883, the Edmonton riding of the North-West Legislative Assembly was established through a royal proclamation. In 1905, the province of Alberta was established, and the district continued as Edmonton (Alberta).

Item is a survey conducted in October and November 1976 for the Edmonton Public School Board. It is a survey of the media services within Edmonton Public Schools within the intent of making recommendations for the further development of these services. This coil-bound document includes the objectives of the survey, its results, and the recommendations. The survey questions appear in the Appendices.

Series consists of minutes taken by the Finance Committee, made up of Edmonton Public Schools Trustees. School Board officials and representatives also attended. The committee addressed the Edmonton Public Schools’ finances, including salaries and investments.

Item consists of information to use during Commonwealth Day observances. Empire Day changed to Commonwealth Day in 1958. Included is information about the flag and a souvenir programme of the Official Flag Raising Ceremony from the visit of Governor General Georges Vanier to Edmonton Public Schools.

The fonds consists of minutes of the Argyll Home and School Association. The Argyll Home and School Association was formed in Edmonton in 1958. With a membership consisting of parents of students attending the school, the association raised funds for the school and served as an advocacy group for school-related issues.

Statements of 1910

Item is a list of statements for 1910. The first statement is regarding permission for the West Edmonton School District No. 2320 to collect property taxes previously collected by the Turnip Lake School District No. 386 within the newly incorporated village of West Edmonton. West Edmonton School District No. 2320 was established on November 25, 1910. The remaining statements list the expenditures, liabilities and assets for the West Edmonton School District No. 2320 for the year 1910.

Minute Book of the Strathcona Public School District No. 216 of the Province of Alberta

Item is the book used to record the minutes of the Strathcona Public School District Board meetings. The minutes were signed by the Secretary-Treasurer and the Chairman. The final entry on 01 Mar 1912 is a note from the Secretary indicating that the Strathcona Public School District ammalgamated with Edmonton Public Schools 01 Feb 1912.

Item is a coil-bound report produced by the Faculty of Physical Education, University of Alberta. The report authors studied the frequency of student injuries based on accident reports from Edmonton Public and Edmonton Separate Schools. Most information in the report is presented using bar-graphs.

Item contains a letter from J. Percy Page, Principal of McDougall Commercial High School to G.A. McKee, Superintendent of Edmonton Public Schools, explaining how the double shift system within McDougall Commercial High School is organized. The remainder of the file is hand-written evaluations of the double shift system written by students and one teacher, Oliver McKee.

An Introduction to Waldorf Education

Item consists of four lectures from the fiftieth anniversary conference of the New York Rudolf Steiner School held March 23-24, 1979, at Teachers College, Columbia University. It lists the schools, their principals, and the amount of time that a relieving teacher would have to provide in 1927-1928 compared to 1926-1927. It appears to be written by the Superintendent of Schools.
