Scope note(s)

  • Post-colonization and prior to 1870, the Hudson's Bay Company governed the West, which included Fort Edmonton (established in 1754). Education of children in the Northwest Territories was provided by church missions and private religious schools. In 1881, a public school was built in the Edmonton settlement. In 1882, Edmonton became part of the District of Alberta, one of the four districts of the Northwest Territories. In 1883, the Edmonton riding of the North-West Legislative Assembly was established through a royal proclamation. In 1905, the province of Alberta was established, and the district continued as Edmonton (Alberta).

Architectural Plans for 1881 Schoolhouse Restoration / drawn by EDG

Item consists of architectural drawings of the 1881 schoolhouse. It includes the site plan for the house on 96 Avenue and 100 Street; floor plans and foundations plans; existing elevations; proposed elevations; proposed interior elevations; electrical and mechanical plans. Of note is the floor plan of the interior of the house before restoration.

Attitudes of Parkallen Residents Towards the Proposed Closure of Parkallen Elementary Public School

Item is a report commissioned by the Parkallen Community League and presented to the Edmonton Public School Board. It was prepared by the Parkallen School Closure Committee and by Western Social and Geographic Surveys, Ltd. It addresses the proposed closure of Parkallen school and the community’s opposition. Included is the questionnaire survey which was conducted in the Parkallen neighbourhood.

L.Y. Cairns Vocational School Equipment Budget

Item is divided into four parts (a-d). (a) budget which lists equipment needed for each room, price of each item and total for each room. (b) memorandum that explains the list does not include music equipment, one unassigned vocational area and teaching aids such as maps and globes. It also recommends that the list of equipment be put out to tender. (c) site plan, main floor plan, and second floor plan. (d) Equipment Budget Breakdown by room. It includes the total equipment for vocational and academic budgets, and the total installation cost broken down into academic, vocational and labor budgets.

Edmonton School District No. 7 Building Program 1980-1983

Item is a coil-bound plan detailing recommendations for school and core portable development for the 1980-1983 period. Core portables are structures attached to the main school building and are usually built in groups of 4, 6 or 8. The plan lists recommended projects, budgets, basis of budget development, the financial effects of the recommended projects, the effect of recommended construction in relation to district enrolment and capacity, and a ranking of the different projects into three priority levels.

This item is a file of notes compiled by Herbert Story during his position as Building Commissioner 1916-1936, with some additions made by an unknown author after Mr. Story’s tenure. Detailed, organized notes were made regarding school buildings constructed between 1904-1931, site plans, playgrounds, school furnishings, air quality in schools, washroom facilities, sports grounds, and formulas to make stone preservative, linseed oil soap, Sanispray, disinfectant, hectograph mass, ink, and blackboard dressing.

Item consists of two copies of a souvenir program. It includes a history of Edmonton Public Schools and photographs of school board officials and schools. Information about cadets and physical education also included. In addition, the description of building specifications for the Edmonton School and Oliver School are mentioned.

Series pertains to the construction, modifications and maintenance of EPSB schools and buildings. Included are construction schedules, tender specifications, architectural and engineering correspondence, blueprints, plans, school inspection reports, and caretaking appointments and resignations. The series is a complete record of the building programs carried out by EPSB on a school by school basis during the period 1942-1972.

Item is document given to Central Services staff and their families at an opening event at the Centre for Education. It lists activities for the evening including dinner in the café, tours, and student entertainment in the atrium. Item consists of specs for the building, heating and ventilation of H. A. Gray School signed by contractors Doyle, Thomas and Christensen Ltd and by Kelly and Kokott Co. Correspondence about construction problems and costs is included. Reference is made to King Edward and McDougall Schools under construction at the same time.

Item was created at the request of the Edmonton Public Schools Board of Trustees. It examines 30 schools either in need of renovation or affected by the City of Edmonton’s proposed roadway plans. For each school, information about Building and Site, Safety and Maintenance, Edmonton Transportation and Urban Renewal, and Functional Status is provided.
