Educating Gifted Students in the Edmonton Public School System

Item is a report prepared for the Edmonton Public School Board by the Advisory Committee on Education of the Gifted. Item also includes an accompanying letter from the Deputy Superintendent of Schools. The Advisory Committee was made up of Edmonton Public Schools employees who presented information and recommendations through the report.

Educational Planning by the Systems Approach : EPSA / Edmonton Public Schools

Item is a progress report for a project, developed by Edmonton Public Schools Department of Research, Development and Information, under the Provincial Government’s Innovative Project Fund. The project was to develop a planning model for a decision-making process that would relate and create accountability for educational objectives to allocated resources. The project was intended to run from 1971-1975, but at the 27 Nov 1973 Board meeting a motion was adopted to terminate it on 31 Dec 1973.

Item contains a synopsis of the follow-up meeting held in response to the eight reports presented to Edmonton Public Schools by the Department of Education High School Inspection Team. A memorandum from the EPS Special Education Branch suggesting follow-up investigations, specifically at W. P. Wagner School, is also included.

Administration Files of Strathcona School District No. 216

Series reflects administrative activities of Strathcona School District No. 216. Although chiefly financial and staffing issues, opening of new schools, amalgamation with Edmonton School District No. 7, Inspector's Reports, correspondence with University of Alberta, Association of School Trustees of Alberta and Department of Education is also included. Of note is a letter from Lieutenant Governor Bulyea regarding the opening of Strathcona Collegiate Institute. Compiled by the Secretary-Treasurer, files are arranged chronologically. Correspondence of a related subject often glued together. The top document reflects the chronological date within the file but often much earlier documents are attached.

The fonds consists of correspondence, press releases, brochures, and programs pertaining to Strembitsky's career as Superintendent of Edmonton Public Schools. Includes correspondence pertaining to his nomination for an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, his appointment as an adjunct professor, and a videotape regarding his resignation from Edmonton Public Schools in 1994. Michael A. Strembitsky was Acting Superintendent of Edmonton Public Schools from Aug-Dec 1972, and Superintendent from 1973 until his resignation in 1994.

The Worth Report

Item is a file pertaining to the Worth Report on Educational Planning. It includes a 1970 Edmonton Public School Board Brief to the Commission on Education Planning, a Reader’s Companion to the Alberta Worth Report on Educational Planning, and photocopies of Calgary Herald and Edmonton Journal articles presenting reactions to the Worth Report.

Item is a booklet which suggests actions that parents can take at home to help prepare their child for school. It was prepared by supervisory staff, elementary counselors and school psychologists within Edmonton Public Schools. It was designed and printed by the students of the Graphics Arts Classes, Jasper Place Composite High School.

Teacher Timetable and Class Load Survey Project

Item is a summary of the Edmonton Public Schools project which took input reports (Teacher Schedule, Class Load and School Specification data) and used a CPU to produce output reports (Teacher Timetable, School Timetable and Class Load Reports). Item includes information about the project and input and output documents.

Series contains inactive files that were closed in June 1971 and sent to the vault for storage. Files are arranged numerically by the original file number assigned by creator.

A Management Model for the Mill Woods Campus

Item is a preliminary report which addresses the development of a management structure for the Mill Woods Campus. It looks at management issues and makes recommendations. It was prepared by APRA (Advance Planning and Research for Architecture) for the Mill Woods Campus Joint Steering Committee consisting of the Edmonton Public School Board, the Edmonton Separate School Board, Edmonton Parks and Recreation, and the Mill Woods Cultural and Recreational Facilities Association.

The Millwoods Campus School : Role Definition

Item is a report which looks at formulating a working Role Definition for the Millwoods Campus High School. Specifically, it looks at the facility itself and the community’s expectations for it. The report was prepared for the Edmonton Public Schools Board of Trustees by APRA (Advance Planning and Research for Architecture). Included are recommendations, a description of the planning process, the results of site visits, the results of a survey of Millwoods residents and educators, and Administrators’ responses.

Immigrants and Schooling

Item pertains to the education of the children of new immigrants from Central Europe particularly Ruthenians and Ukrainians. It includes articles, handbooks, addresses, House of Commons Debates and reports from 1895-1934. Item is an educational kit used by students taking Education Foundations 430 at the University of Alberta.

Progressive Education

Item pertains to the theory and methods of Enterprise Education. It includes criticisms of Enterprise Education and reflections of teachers who taught it. Enterprise Education is based on the philosophy of the Progressive Education Association. The information in the kit is from 1917-1970, predominantly 1929-1946. Item is an educational kit used by students taking Education Foundations 430 at the University of Alberta.

Inner City Schools

Item consists of reports, minutes and research produced by the Committee on Education in Older Areas of the City. This committee was made up of senior officials in Edmonton Public Schools. It investigated problems associated with educating children in inner city schools and addressed future city development which would affect inner city schools.

Administration Files : Dramatics

Item focuses on Dramatics in the Intermediate and High Schools. Included are supply costs, costs for erecting stages with written and sketched plans and correspondence from the Alberta Dramatic League. Intermediate and High Schools offering Dramatics in 1937 are listed with names of the Dramatics teachers. These are McKay Avenue, King Edward, Westmount, Strathcona, McCauley, Victoria, Eastwood, Spruce Avenue, Highlands, Riverdale, Normal Practice, Garneau and H.A. Gray.

Administration Files : Mental Tests

Item contains correspondence regarding intelligence tests. Included are letters of concern from parents, a copy of a letter from the Edmonton High School Teachers' Alliance and correspondence with C.B. Willis, Victoria High, regarding the comparison of student I.Q.'s within the city High Schools. Also included is a sample test.

Review of Educational Policies in Canada

Item is a six volume report coordinated by a Council of Education Ministers in co-operation with the Federal Government. The six volumes: Forward & Introduction, Government of Canada, Western Region, Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Region were to acquaint others with educational development in Canada and to assist the educational authorities in planning more effectively for the future. Most include a descriptions of education within the region, including trends, goals, structure and post-secondary institutions. The Government of Canada Report addresses the Federal Government's role in education.

Planning and Accommodation

Administration Files : Vacation School

Item pertains to the Vacation School, a program at Victoria High School to prepare grade XI students for supplemental examinations. Examinations were conducted by the Department of Education and the University of Alberta. The Vacation School was aimed at students who failed their June examinations but others took the summer courses as well. File includes correspondence, planning information and reports from teachers.

Item consists of four blank notebooks entitled:
”A Sure Cure," "Childhood's Happy Hours," "The Hurdle Race," and "Big Boy". They were printed by the Hilroy company.

Education Committee Minutes and Reports

Series consists of photocopies of the minutes of the Edmonton Public Schools Education Committee and related memorandums, speeches and reports. The committee was made up of Edmonton Public Schools trustees and school officials. Administrative personnel were frequently at meetings.
