Western Libraries Historical Collection

Fonds consists of records related to the establishment, operation, and activities of the libraries at Western University. The fonds is composed of 7 series, with various designated sub-series.
The General Series primarily consists of records related to the staff activities and operations of the wider library system at Western University. This series includes materials related to departmental committees, working groups and task forces, along with system-wide initiatives and communications. The series also includes materials related to planning, professional development, and fundraising. The series includes three sub-series, the first of which contains records related to the research, development and publication of The Libraries at Western: 1970-1987. The book was written by former Western University Law Librarian Margaret A. Banks. The second sub-series includes records related to the Twenty Year Club, a staff recognition which began in 1985. The final sub-series included staff-facing newsletters published within the library system.
The Office of the University Librarian series primarily includes records related to those who have held the role of Chief or University Librarian at Western University, although it also includes records more generally issued from that office. Sub-series have been designated for the following University Librarians: Fred Landon (Director of Library Services 1923-1927, Chief Librarian 1927-1947), Dr. James J. Talman (Chief Librarian, 1947-1970), Dr. Robert Lee (Director of Libraries, 1970-1989) and Catherine Quinlan (University Librarian, 1990-1997).
The Lawson Memorial Library series and D.B. Weldon Library series consist of records related to the development, construction, and operations of each library, respectively.
The Science Libraries series primarily consist of records related to the early the science department libraries at Western University, prior to their amalgamation. Textual and graphic materials related to the former Faculty of Medicine Library and Engineering library are featured. The series also includes records related to space allocation, the amalgamation of the science libraries, and the construction of the Allyn & Betty Taylor Library
The Regional History and Special Collections series include records related to rare and valuable manuscripts and musical compositions held by Western Libraries, in addition to archival materials maintained within the library system. Records primarily pre-date the establishment of Western University's Archives and Research Collections Centre (ARCC) in 2002, which currently houses the majority of Special Collections and archival materials.
The Slides series consists of over 1000 colour slides, most of which were created in the 1970s and 1980s. The slides include content from various libraries at Western, including Althouse College of Education Library, the Engineering Library, the Law Library, the Music Library and the D.B. Weldon Library.

Series consists of records pertaining to the general history of the library system at Western University, in addition to records related to library operations and staff activities. This series includes news clippings and historical profiles of John Davies Barnett, and the donation of his book collection to Western University in 1918. The series also includes records related to departmental committees, working groups and task forces such as: The Website Committee, Circulation Services Committee, Reference Services Committee, Administrative Services Committee, Library Appeals Committee, Inventory Control Task Group and Serial Task Group. The series includes records related to system-wide initiatives including the University Library Council and UWOLS 3C's. The series also features policies, organizational charts, and reports, including the Status of the Library System (Grindlay Report, 1974). Materials related to professional development, and fundraising are also present, including textual and multi-media materials related to the Western Libraries' involvement in Campaign Western. The series also includes photographs, notebooks, and a signature stamp from former Deputy Chief Librarian John Macpherson.

Lawson Memorial Library

Series consists of records related to the establishment and operation of the Lawson Memorial Library, located in the Lawson Memorial Building at Western University. Records include news clippings and articles describing the building and opening of the library in 1934, in addition to invitations and ephemera from the library's grand opening. Graphic materials, including photographs of the interior and exterior, and floorplans documenting the layout of the library are also included. The series also features records related to the closure of the Library in 1971, and the move to the new D.B. Weldon Library.

Series consists of records related to the early development and activities of the Regional History Collection and Special Collections at Western Libraries. The series includes news clippings and correspondences documenting the development of the Treasure Room in the Lawson Memorial Library, which would eventually serve as the basis for the Special Collections at Western University. The series includes materials related to the Regional History room, and the initial integration of archival holdings into Western Libraries. The series also features photographs, news clippings, and ephemera related to major donations, acquisitions, and exhibitions. Contents of this series predate the establishment of Western Archives and the building of the Archives and Research Collections Centre (ARCC) in 2002.

Series consists of 1131 colour slides depicting the interior and exterior architecture, staff, collections, and users of various libraries at Western University. The series includes slides of the Althouse College of Education Library and the Engineering Library, the latter of which was located in the Engineering Science Building. Other featured libraries include the Law Library, located in the Josephine Spencer Niblett Faculty of Law Building, and Music Library, located at Talbot College. In addition, the series features an extensive selection of slides of the D.B. Weldon Library, including its construction and official opening.
