John M. Watt, Architect was the private practice of architect John MacLeod Watt, which he opened after moving to Windsor, Ontario in late 1906. For the first year of its operation, Watt ran an office out of both Windsor and Detroit, Michigan, until at least January 26, 1907, after which the Detroit office closed. Watt shuttered his private practice at the end of 1907 before partnering with american architect Charles Howard Crane. Watt later reopened his private practice in 1945 after dissolving his partnership with Victor Joseph Blackwell. His firm primarily designed residences, apartment buildings, churches, and private buildings for corporations. Some of the firm's larger clients were Brewers' Warehousing Company (now known as The Beer Strore), John Labatt Ltd., and Kelvinator Company of Canada. The private practice ended in 1950, when Watt partnered with Peter Tillman to open their firm Watt & Tillman, Architects.
História custodial
Material came to Western Archives as a donation from Museum London in 2013. The materials were previously donated to Museum London (then the London Regional Art & Historical Museums) in 1991 by Edward H. Hagarty, Architects which had inherited the records from previous interations of the firm.

Fonds consists of architectural drawings created by John M. Watt, Architect during the tenure of the firm. The architectural drawings are primarily of additions or alterations to commercial projects, in addition to private residences, churches, and apartment buildings. The majority of the plans are for buildings in Windsor or London, though the firm had clients throughout Southwestern Ontario. Architectural drawings include floor plans, architectural elevations, presentation drawings, section details, and heating and electrical layouts, among others. In addition, some series also include specification files, which detail the construction materials and requirements for the building designs.

Fonds came to Western Archives with Watt and Crane architectural drawings interfiled among the drawings of other firms. Subsequently, order was imposed by the archivist. Fonds was arranged according to project number within each series, with series ordered according to the earliest project number. Plans that are missing project numbers are arranged chronologically.
