When it was opened in 1924 the Science Building (Physics and Astronomy) was considered state of the art. The interior walls contained fireproof tiles and all of the service pipes i.e. gas, steam, vacuum and water, were left exposed to facilitate quick repair in the event of problems. The building also had two electrical systems, the regular alternating 120 current and a direct current, supported by a room full of large batteries. The building was situated to face south in order that the large laboratory windows would let in as much light as possible. For a while it had the label of ‘the sunshine building’.
