It took 12 years from the time the University instigated its own Student Police Force before the first female students were hired in 1970. L-R Barbris Stalbecker, Susan Whittier, Virve Ruhns and Sheila Scharsky surround Steve Menzies, head of the Student force. Menzies stated that he saw no reason not to hire female members for the force but there was one exception. Female members were not permitted to work in the student pub, The Spoke and Rim, because of a contractual agreement between the pub manager and the Student Council.
