Scope and content

Originally composed for the newly opened Sir Adam Beck Collegiate (1927) in east London, a song by Western student Walter Smithers was rejected as unsuitable. However the song won the $25 prize in a competition for the official Western University song and Smithers shared the prize with a lyricist and a student who sang it at convocation. The song was later re-arranged by western icon, Don Wright. Graduating from Western’s Medical School he returned for the 1960 homecoming reunion. An interesting backdrop for Dr. Smithers is the Middlesex clock tower still under construction awaiting its copper clad spire.
