Space within the university library system (Lawson Memorial Library) began to approach critical levels at the beginning of the decade. Each year over 10,000 new books and more than 25,000 magazines and newspapers were crammed onto the shelves. Librarian JJ Talman stated that, "One had to sometimes move stacks of books and papers in order to retrieve a particular document which invariably was always at the bottom of the pile." Two additions were eventually added to the building before its replacement with the construction of the DB Weldon Library in 1971.
