Although physics professor R. W. Nicholls (in foreground) called his apparatus 'just a toy' the shock tube made from a piece of steam pipe could produce a shock wave so hot it would glow. The effect was like that of a jet breaking the sound barrier. The studies were aimed at gaining a better understanding of light as found in the aurora or air glow.
