Charles Somerville was a member of that visionary Board of Governors who in 1908 secularized the university from the church and served as its Chairman from 1914-19 He was a member of the 1919 Cody Commission that successfully petitioned the Government for financial aid for Western that led to new buildings on the present campus. He was also a familiar kindly figure to many students and on numerous occasions offered financial aid to those in need. The naming of Somerville House in 1955 recognized his enormous contributions to Western and the London community.
