Scope note(s)

  • Post-colonization and prior to 1870, the Hudson's Bay Company governed the West, which included Fort Edmonton (established in 1754). Education of children in the Northwest Territories was provided by church missions and private religious schools. In 1881, a public school was built in the Edmonton settlement. In 1882, Edmonton became part of the District of Alberta, one of the four districts of the Northwest Territories. In 1883, the Edmonton riding of the North-West Legislative Assembly was established through a royal proclamation. In 1905, the province of Alberta was established, and the district continued as Edmonton (Alberta).

Minute Book of Committee on School Management

Item is the minutes of Committee on School Management of Edmonton School District No. 7. The committee was also known as the Management Committee. Minutes address staffing and building issues and include complaints about Superintendent McCaig. Both Superintendents McCaig and McKee were on the Committee. Most minutes are signed by both the Secretary, W. D. Bradley, and the Chairman, S. A. G. Barnes.

Directory of Pupils

Item consists of class lists at Virginia Park School. Each list includes the date, the teacher, the room number, the names of the students with their addresses, birth dates, grades, schools attended last June and religions. The list includes only those names which were on the register before September 30th of the year.

Item is a newspaper. Some international and national items are included but it is mainly concerned with local news. Of note is an article stating that J. St. G. Jellett has retired from the store business at Clover Bar. St. George Jellett was the School Board Secretary-Treasurer 1893-1908.

Item is a file containing letters from individuals applying for the position of Director of Technical Education. Includes letter of successful applicant, W. L. Richardson. A more accurate description of the position is Principal of Edmonton Technical School. All letters are re-typed copies.

Item consists of the reports, correspondence, timetables, and suggested exercises and lessons maintained by T.E. Hughes, Supervisor of Manual Training.

Item is a leaflet which was provided to people attending the Edmonton Public School Board meetings as visitors. It includes the names and photographs of the Trustees who were in office from Oct 1968 to Oct 1971. It includes the seating arrangement for Board meetings.

Official Track and Field Rules Authorized by the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada

Item consists of two handbooks taped together. The first is the Official Track and Field Rules published in 1957. The second handbook contains revisions and refers back to the first. The handbooks were put out by the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada. This item was in the Edmonton Public Schools Teachers’ Professional Library.

The fonds consists of minutes and assessment roll of the North Edmonton School District. The North Edmonton School District No. 2305 was established in November 1910. The district amalgamated with the Edmonton School District No. 7 in 1912.

Michael A. Strembitsky fonds

The fonds consists of correspondence, press releases, brochures, and programs pertaining to Strembitsky's career as Superintendent of Edmonton Public Schools. Includes correspondence pertaining to his nomination for an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, his appointment as an adjunct professor, and a videotape regarding his resignation from Edmonton Public Schools in 1994. Michael A. Strembitsky was Acting Superintendent of Edmonton Public Schools from Aug-Dec 1972, and Superintendent from 1973 until his resignation in 1994.

Edmonton Schoolboys' Band fonds

The collection consists of music books, sheet music, programs, photographs, photo album, filmstrips, sound and video recordings of performances, and clippings pertaining to the Edmonton Schoolboys' Band. The band started up in 1936-37 and consisted of students in grades 4-12. It took over the trusteeship of instruments and uniforms of the Edmonton Newsboys' Band that disbanded in 1928. The Edmonton Schoolboys' Band was active in the Edmonton area from 1936 to 1969.

Abbie Scott fonds

The fonds consists of scrapbook, diary, and photograph of Abbie Scott. Includes diary of 1924 Grad trip to Europe and programmes of Grad social events, 1935-1940. Abbie Scott was a member of the Edmonton Grad basketball team of 1923-1924, which won the world basketball championships held in Edmonton in 1923. The team traveled to Europe in 1924. The team disbanded in 1940. Scott was a member of the Edmonton Grads Club, an alumni association, and took part in the ceremony inducting the team into Edmonton Hall of Fame in 1973.

Better Education Association fonds

The fonds consists of constitution, minutes, financial statements, newsletters, briefs, newspaper clippings, campaign brochures, candidate biographies, correspondence, and policy statements of the Better Education Association. Includes school board election results from 1963-1966. Originally known as the Edmonton Association for the Advancement of Education, the Better Education Association was established in 1960. The BEA was a political organization which sponsored candidates in local school board trustee elections throughout the 1960s.

High School Timetables

Item consists of timetables for individual High School teachers in Edmonton Public Schools. Each timetable lists the courses taught in each period and includes the average size of group instructed and the teacher’s extracurricular activities. The file is divided by school. Some statistical analysis included.

Series contains files created by the Superintendent's office documenting EPS administration. The files include correspondence, memoranda, copies of board minutes, blueprints, plans, and other material reflecting daily operations. The series covers a number of subjects including matters of curriculum, schools, associations, contract negotiations, planning, government departments, enrolments, teachers, the hiring of personnel, and school construction. Integrity of original filing system maintained.

By-Laws and Rules of Order

Item is a booklet of the By-Laws and Rules of Order for the Edmonton Public School Board. The booklet was printed by the Technical High School Press.

Item originated in Bennett School and consists of a general list of supplies to be handed out, a tally of supplies given to individual pupils in Grades II, III and IV in September 1915, and the names of the students who received primers in January 1915.

Item is the term examination report for Bennett School. It lists the students, their ages, the grades they achieved in various subjects, and the teachers' recommendations. The name of the teacher for each grade is also included.

Corporal Punishment and Substitute Teacher Record

Item consists of a notebook and a memorandum. The notebook contains Bennett School records of student punishments ca. 1949-1956, and substitute teachers ca.1954-1955 - 1970-1971. The memorandum is dated August 1, 1969 and is from J.C. McCall to all Principals requesting assessments of substitute teachers.
