Scope note(s)

  • Post-colonization and prior to 1870, the Hudson's Bay Company governed the West, which included Fort Edmonton (established in 1754). Education of children in the Northwest Territories was provided by church missions and private religious schools. In 1881, a public school was built in the Edmonton settlement. In 1882, Edmonton became part of the District of Alberta, one of the four districts of the Northwest Territories. In 1883, the Edmonton riding of the North-West Legislative Assembly was established through a royal proclamation. In 1905, the province of Alberta was established, and the district continued as Edmonton (Alberta).

Item is a memorandum from Alma Webster, Library Supervisor, to T. D. Thorson, Supervisor Administrative Staffing. Minute Book of the Committee on Buildings and Grounds

Item is the minutes of an Edmonton School District No. 7 committee. Comprised of several trustees and a secretary, the committee addressed issues such as concerns/wages of caretakers and workmen, maintenance of buildings and grounds, costs, new schools, additions to buildings, tenders, contracts, accounts, expenditures and community use of buildings and grounds. Minutes are arranged chronologically by year. Most minutes are original. Some are signed by the Secretary and the Chairman.

Item contains correspondence written and maintained by the Secretary-Treasurer for the Board of Trustees. C.F. Strang and St. George Jellett were the Secretary-Treasurers at this time. Included are letters to the Board of Education, teachers, school inspectors and the Imperial Bank. Subjects include the purchasing of supplies, complaints about night students, debentures received, the hiring of staff, the purchasing of a school site and teacher agreements.

Building and Grounds Committee Minutes

Series contains the minutes of the Building and Grounds Committee, made up of Edmonton Public Schools trustees. In 1935 the committee became the Property Committee. The committee addressed the care and expansion of buildings and grounds and issues affecting custodial and trades staff. It received monthly accounts from the Building Commissioner, information from the Engineer and Superintendent, and concerns from other parties.

Sub-Conference Negotiating Committee Minutes

Series consists of minutes from committees whose function was to negotiate contracts, agreements and procedures with employee unions. The committees were made up of Edmonton Public Schools Trustees, School Board officials and representatives. From 11 Feb 1961 to 12 Sep 1968 the committee was called the Sub-Conference Negotiating Committee. From 20 Nov 1968 to 13 Nov 1972 a number of different committees with different members were involved.

Series consists of index cards listing yearly contract and salary records for teachers. Each card includes a teacher’s name, school, date of contract agreement, salary, type of teacher’s certificate, and first day of service. On verso is a record of work by month and day and of monthly payments. Data handwritten. Series is incomplete. It includes surnames from Ainsley to Scott.

Item is a list of teachers approved for appointment to Edmonton Public Schools. The list provides the following information. The date the appointment was authorized, the class of certification held by the teacher, provisional or temporary appointment, the beginning and end dates of the appointment, the department or level of teaching to which the teacher was assigned, the salary, and whether or not the appointment was accepted.

Inspectors' Reports on Teachers 1924 and 1925

Item is a list of the teachers in each school. For each teacher, it lists the grade the teacher taught, the rating the teacher received from the school inspector for both 1924 and 1925, and the name of the inspector who evaluated the teacher.

Parkdale School Fiftieth Anniversary

Item is a booklet prepared by Parkdale School and its Home and School Association to celebrate the school’s 50th Anniversary. The booklet includes short biographies of former principals, and a chronological list of Parkdale School highlights. The Edmonton Public School Board Trustees and Administration personnel are listed along with the entire 1963 Parkdale School staff. The anniversary was celebrated with a short program, which is also listed in the booklet.

Item is a bulletin produced by Edmonton Public Schools which includes district information of interest to Edmonton Public Schools instructional staff. In this issue is a history of Edmonton Public Schools. Of note is a piece describing J. Percy Page's resignation from the School Board and his appointment as Lieutenant-Governor. The Edmonton Public Schools bulletin was produced from Jan 1949 until Feb 1961 after which it was removed from the budget at the Board’s request.

Item is an example of the forms filled out by the schools that required alphabetical listings of teachers, hours of school operation, and the day and month and time of staff meetings. Bonnie Doon, Eastwood, McArthur and Queen’s Avenue all include non-instructional staff.

The memoranda provided information about schools, students, staff, buildings, departments, curriculum changes, grievances, press releases and meetings. Appendices are included, but not all are on file.

Item contains correspondence written and maintained by A.T. Mode, Secretary-Treasurer of Strathcona School District No. 216. Subjects addressed include plans for the new Collegiate Institute, hiring teachers, tenders, debentures, re-opening date of school, letters to papers regarding advertisements, paying for plumbing and piano tuning, auditing books, requesting catalogues, a loan from the bank and leasing a school to the University of Alberta. Letters are numbered and an alphabetical index is included.
